First Bloom Developmental Lab is designed for students who benefit from a smaller, highly individualized and supportive educational environment.Our students may have learning, developmental, emotional, behavioral, sensory, communication, or regulation needs that make it difficult to fully access learning in a larger or more traditional school setting. Rather than defining students by a diagnosis or by the challenges that brought them to First Bloom, we focus on understanding who they are, what they need, and what helps them grow.Each First Bloom lab serves just six students and combines meaningful academics with hands-on learning through agriculture, sustainability, technology, and real-world problem-solving.The outcomes we work toward extend beyond academic progress. Students have opportunities to strengthen self-regulation, communication, executive functioning, confidence, problem-solving, practical skills, and greater independence.Exposure to modern agriculture, STEM, sustainability, and entrepreneurship also gives students opportunities to discover interests and abilities that may eventually connect to future education, careers, trades, or business ownership.The goal is not to determine a child's future for them. It is to help them build the skills, confidence, and experiences that give them more possibilities for the future.

What does neurodivergent mean and can First Bloom serve students with autism or an Emotional Disability eligibility?

Neurodivergent is a broad term used to describe people whose brains process, learn, communicate, regulate, or experience the world in ways that differ from what is considered typical. It may include individuals with autism, ADHD, learning differences, and other neurological or developmental differences.An Emotional Disability (ED) is different. It is a special education eligibility category used when a student's emotional or behavioral needs meet specific educational criteria and affect their ability to access or benefit from learning.First Bloom is designed to support students with a range of learning, developmental, emotional, behavioral, sensory, communication, and regulation needs, including students with autism and students identified with an Emotional Disability.Because each First Bloom lab serves just six students, our team can provide a highly individualized environment with predictable routines, sensory-aware supports, positive and proactive approaches to behavior, meaningful academics, and opportunities for hands-on learning.Placement and enrollment are considered individually. Our goal is to understand each student's strengths, needs, educational goals, and required supports to determine whether First Bloom can provide an appropriate environment for that student.At First Bloom, differences are not treated as something a child must overcome in order to belong. We build from each student's strengths while providing the structure, support, and instruction they need to continue growing.

How does First Bloom support behavior and emotional regulation?

At First Bloom, behavior is approached with curiosity, consistency, and care. We work to understand what a student may be communicating through their behavior, identify patterns and triggers, and provide the structure and support they need to feel safe and regain regulation.Our micro environment allows staff to respond early, before frustration or dysregulation becomes a crisis. Predictable routines, clear expectations, sensory-aware supports, movement, opportunities for regulation, positive relationships, and individualized strategies are built into the school day.Students are not shamed or defined by difficult moments. When challenges occur, our focus is on helping the student become safe, regulated, and ready to re-engage, while also teaching the communication, coping, problem-solving, and self-regulation skills they can use over time.Safety matters for every student and every adult at First Bloom. Our team uses proactive support and de-escalation first, with any more restrictive safety intervention reserved for situations in which it is necessary to protect someone from immediate harm and used only in accordance with applicable law, student plans, and trained safety protocols.Our goal is not simply to manage behavior. It is to help students understand themselves, develop greater regulation and independence, and experience school as a place where they can recover from difficult moments and continue learning.

How does First Bloom prepare students for success beyond the program?

For some students, First Bloom may serve as a supportive step toward returning to a less restrictive educational setting when they are ready and when their educational team determines that transition is appropriate.Part of our work is helping students better understand themselves, their strengths, triggers, sensory and emotional needs, communication patterns, and the strategies that help them stay regulated and engaged.Students have opportunities to practice self-awareness, self-management, communication, problem-solving, and coping strategies in a small, supportive environment where those skills can be taught, practiced, and strengthened over time.When reintegration is appropriate, First Bloom can support the transition by sharing progress, successful strategies, and information about the conditions that have helped the student thrive.The goal is not simply for a student to function well at First Bloom. It is to help them develop skills and greater understanding of themselves that they can carry into future classrooms, relationships, workplaces, and everyday life.
